Aptly named for its many lakes, Lakeland is located directly on the I-4 corridor, conveniently located to Tampa and Orlando and near major shipping hubs, airports and port facilities. Lakeland Linder International Airport serves as one of the state’s largest logistical hubs for goods including Amazon Prime Air and is also home to NOAA’s Hurricane Hunters. With a population of 112,000, Lakeland boasts many large industries, including healthcare, insurance, transportation, logistics and warehousing, tourism, music, and phosphate mining. The city’s largest employers include grocery chains, packaging and shipping, retail, professional services, and healthcare facilities. The area is home to three major institutes of higher education, Florida Southern College, Southeastern University, and Florida Polytechnic University. Several sports teams reside in Lakeland including indoor football, indoor soccer, and G-League basketball. For over 84 consecutive years, the Detroit Tigers migrate to Lakeland for spring training with a year-round training and rehabilitation facility alongside their minor league affiliate, the Flying Tigers, based at Joker Marchant Stadium.
